Imagine you're floating through space, with no sense of gravity. You see another person doing the same. You notice that you both have your own inertia, your own impetus propelling you "forward" in different directions. You really want to know what this person is about. What do you need in order to get to know this person and understand them? You'll need some kind of gravity in common; or, common ground. Without gravity in common, you'll just float by each other. Your respective inertia will mean that you'll never understand one another, because the only 'expression' you'll have is your own inertia.
